Black Saturday Bushfire Arson Arrests - 14 and 15 Year Olds Charged With Maiden Gully Fire in Bendigo
Police have arrested and charged two young teenagers in relation to a major fire at Maiden Gully during the Black Saturday bushfires on 7 February, 2009.
The Maiden Gully fire devastated the area, killing one man from Long Gully and destroying 354 hectares of land, 61 houses and 125 sheds and outbuildings. The estimated damage bill for the fire was over $23 million.
The arrests of the teens took place at about 9am Tuesday morning and were made by Taskforce Phoenix. The two teenagers cannot be named due to their age.
They were each charged with the following offences: Arson Causing Death, Deliberately Light a Bushfire, Light Fire on Total Fire Ban Day, Light Fire in Country area during extreme weather conditions.
In addition, they were both charged with multiple counts of Use Telecommunications Service to menace, harass and offend and 135 counts each of Criminal Damage by Fire (Arson).
The teenagers will appear in court late Tuesday afternoon.
