Eight Men Arrested After Gang Bashing of Indian Students in Swanston Street Melbourne CBD

Two Indian students were apparently bashed in an gang incident in Swanston Street on the eve of Australia Day. Eight men have so far been arrested in connection with the attack.

It is understood that the attack on two students aged 18 and 20 occurred at about 10.20pm on Monday night on popular Swanston Street in Melbourne CBD.

The two students were allegedly approached by a group of about 10 people. It is believed that some comments, possibly of a racist nature were made to the two Indians before the 18 year old was pushed to the ground then kicked by some members of the gang. The victim sustained a wound to the left ear with what police believe was an edged weapon.

The 22 year old Indian student was also punched and hit the ground. He sustained abrasions to his forearm.

The attackers then fled the scene. They were described as being of Asian appearance.

After the attack the offenders described as of Asian appearance fled. Victoria police arrested 8 men several hours later and they were being questioned in relation to the attack

Several hours later police in the city arrested eight men and they are being questioned over the attack. Four of the arrested men were later released while four remained in custody early on Tuesday afternoon.

The 18 year old student was transported to the St Vincent’s Hospital with lacerations to the left ear while the 22 year old did not need hospital treatment.

Neither of the two Indian Students wish to be identified.
